Today Green issues and reducing our carbon footprint dominate many a conversation.
There are reports stating that the air we breath is no longer clean; coral reefs are slowly being eradicated by warmer ocean temperatures; various terrestrial, marine and freshwater animal species, some vital to our survival, face extinction; some of our freshwater supply contains poisons like mercury and arsenic and large swathes of land are being made barren by industry.
And we need to ask ourselves if this is the world we want to live in and leave to our children? And what do we value more – human life or our current habits?
A change is not wanted, but needed.
What difference can you make? No, you don't need to write a cheque for the next environmental charity you hear about. Like they say, actions speak louder than words. Do something, anything, no matter how big or small just do it. Do something NOW!
Join the Team at One Place and help to promote the following tips and advice to help save our planet!!
- Grow more – Our grandparents probably grew their own fruit and veg. Windowsills, pots and patios can all provide ample opportunity to grow your own. Food from your garden covers no food miles and is fun to grow.
- Buy less – Everything you buy has an environmental, as well as a monetary cost. Only buy what you really need and leave the rest in the shop.
- Recycle more – One man’s waste is another man’s gold-mine. If you decide to upgrade the things you have and use, remember that someone else might really appreciate what you would otherwise throw away.
- Replace less – Labour costs in Western Europe are now so high, and things like washing machines so (relatively)
cheap, that we’re encouraged to replace things that with some time, ingenuity and cannibalisation could be repaired. - Make more – Did you used to watch Blue Peter? If you did, you’ll be familiar with the notion of making, rather than buying things. Making things can be fun and is in many ways more rewarding than buying new.
- Demand less – In today’s competitive world, those seeking our custom offer more and more as they strive to differentiate themselves from their rivals. But do you really need all of the extras? Opt out of what you don’t need and demand less!
- Share more – Try collective ownership. For example owning a petrol strimmer with three neighbours. It saves everyone buying something inferior at greater cost. At work, at home and everywhere, try to share; it’s not mean, it’s green!
- Print less – Lots of people talk about the paperless office, but have you ever tried to create it?
